Math: This week we are taking the chapter 2 test and jumping into chapter 3 which is all about two digit addition. I wanted to thank you for your support in making sure your child is logging into our google classroom every Friday and doing their school work and i-ready minutes on those digital days.
This is also a friendly reminder for the new parents in our class that I do not send home math homework to be returned to school. It is between you and your child if you want them to do the worksheets I send home, but I don't need them back and won't be grading them. I honestly feel like we get a lot of math time in during the day and they could use more time outside playing with their families for their "homework."

MATH- I have decided that each week I will teach two lessons on Thursday so math students only need to do the independent practice at home on Fridays. They will still need to log into google classroom and mark the assignment as done. The video that will be attached to Friday's assignment is meant for the Full digital learners who were not present for the 2nd math lesson on Thursdays. Your child should not need to watch it again unless they are confused on what they need to do on their independent practice. The zoom is from 11:30-12 but not mandatory. Only log in if you have questions. Students get an extra 5 minutes of recess for turning in that independent practice on Mondays since I know it will be hard for them to remember to bring the worksheet back to school from Friday. Hopefully that will motivate them! I take attendance for their Fridays by looking at who turned in the work on Monday and who marked their assignment as done on google classroom.
HOMEROOM- This week, we will be starting our "Fun Fridays!" During a normal school year, this would be a time for parents to volunteer to come in and teach a craft or game to students during homeroom. This year, I will be posting student's fun activities through the homeroom google classroom. I still need to discuss with the other 2nd grade teachers what we are making the requirements for joining fun Friday because we use it as a motivator to get your unfinished work done on time. The consequence for not getting your work done on time is that those students will be assigned to do that work during homeroom time on Fridays. I will send a follow up email detailing what this weeks requirements are so the whole grade is on the same page. Thank you! MATH- This week we are starting into Chapter 1. Your child will come home with the myMath Homework page but they DO NOT need to do the homework or turn it into me. If you want them to do it, feel free to grade it at home. I will also have students do i-ready during school time so they shouldn't need to do that at home unless they are falling behind or still need minutes on Friday to meet our 45 min goal. Please remember that if your child is a distance learner, they should be logging in every Monday-Thursday into zoom so they can be a part of our live math lesson. On Fridays, we have an optional zoom from 11:30-12:00 for any questions.
HOMEROOM- This week we are starting Living and Non-living things in Science. The students have PE on Tuesdays so please have them wear appropriate shoes. Homeroom is a required class on Fridays so your child should log in and do the work on our google classroom. The only time students won't need to do homeroom on Fridays is if it is a half day on our school calendar. This Friday is a half day so there is no Homeroom, only Literacy and Math Hello!
You've found Mrs. Brooks' class website for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year! I look forward to meeting all of my new students and families this month. Feel free to take a look around! Don't worry about posts below! That is last year's class information. :) Math: This week we are working on picture graphs and bar graphs. The students love collecting data through surveys and organizing it into graphs! I was happy to see that they are able to handle the challenges I have been giving them with 3rd grade level graphing.
Homeroom: This week we are writing letters to get donations for our class garden. We are also going to dive into force and motion in preparation for the egg drop! A form will be coming home for volunteers and rules/dates for the egg drop. It will be fun! It is Post Office Week. You can write letters to your child and buy candy grams that will be delivered throughout the week. Candy grams are sold in the front office before school starts at during lunch. There is a large mailbox out front for letters.
Conferences are coming up in March. I believe a sign up will be sent out soon! In past years, Spring conferences have been optional. If you would like to check on your child's data, or have any questions or concerns please sign up. Mrs. Hyde and I will be doing conferences on Wednesday March 4th only, but can make accommodations if needed for another day. Homeroom: This week we are reading our books "Little Leaders" which are about African Americans throughout history. The students have had many questions about slavery since we read about Harriet Tubman which has been awesome! So don't be surprised when they come home with more questions about Black History this month! Math: We are going to push the chapter 7 test off until next Monday so the students do not have to take it on Valentines day! This week we will finish up the chapter and do a few days of review since many students have not fully grasped the regrouping in 10s and 100s in subtracting 3 digit numbers. Math: This week we are going to be wrapping up most of chapter 7 that way we can review and test next week. I have been very proud of our class and how much we have accomplished with 3 digit subtraction. It is fun to teach them more than the process since they understand the reasoning behind regrouping. Homeroom: This week we have a service learning assembly where students get to talk about the awards we received as a class. Our class will receive 3 awards including "Writing a Letter" as a class, keeping a reflection journal, and doing a survey for the 2nd grade.
Math: This week we are focusing in on subtraction as we start chapter 7! The students are reviewing basic concepts so they do not get confused with the 3 digit addition we just finished. I'm excited to continue having them develop quiz questions for our weekly QR quizzes in class!
Homeroom: We are looking for another parent to volunteer on February 7th for Fun Friday! If you are interested, please email me ASAP! We are excited to be starting our research and planning for our school garden! My students will be helping out the 6th graders with creating a garden and we are excited to send more information home as we get further into this service project. Math: Our class has been flying through this chapter! In order to help us review for the test this Friday and our Middle of Year Benchmark next week, students have been challenged by the task of coming up with review questions for our quiz next week. I'm excited to see how they will challenge themselves and their peers.
Homeroom: We are going to start learning out rocks this weeks and more science topics since we were able to review procedures and bust out a bunch of our 1/2 birthdays last week. Students earned an extra recess since they listened respectfully to one of our classmates share about her trip around the world in December! We are in need of a parent volunteer for Fun Friday this Friday (the 10th) and the 24th of January! Please email me if you could come in to help!
Math: This week we are starting to learn about 3 digit addition. Since these students are picking it up quickly, we are going to pick up the pace and challenge them with things like 4 digit addition when it is applicable as well as place value games. Homeroom: We started our Monday off with reviewing our rules and procedures in class. This week we are celebrating a bunch of half birthdays and starting our unit on maps! |
